Description

Enerdrive ePOWER 12V 40A DC to DC Battery Charger designed to meet the rugged demands of Australian conditions and delivering multiple source charging for DC systems.

The Enerdrive ePOWER DC2DC Battery Charger is a fully automatic multistage, multi input battery charger with the ability to charge from either an alternator linked to a battery; or via solar power with the in built Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) Solar Controller. With two inputs available, the main/house battery will be charged from either the engine while underway, or via the solar panels when stationary. The process to choose either engine or solar is fully automatic and both functions are controlled from within the unit itself without the need for external relays.

During normal operation the ePOWER DC2DC+ Battery Charger will do a full charge cycle to float stage on the house battery bank with ability to choose either GEL, AGM, Flooded, Custom Programmable or Lithium. Once float stage is reached the charger transitions to a power supply mode to support any on-board DC loads.

12V 40A DC2DC Battery Charger Features

  • Two totally independent DC Inputs for both engine and solar regulation charging one house battery bank output
  • DC M6 screw terminals that will allow for large battery cable connection between all sources
  • A dedicated Maximum Power Point (MPPT) solar regulator
  • The same battery algorithms as included in Enerdrives AC mains ePOWER battery charger including a specific lithium charging profile
  • 40A output up to 40+°C with thermo controlled fan cooling
  • Fully programmable LCD display to show which source is charging the battery along with charger status, voltage and amperage
  • Temperature sensor included in charger for more accurate battery charging

Multistage Charging Process

The ePOWER DC2DC+ Battery Charger is a fully automatic, set and forget charger. It is designed to quickly and accurately recharge your deep cycle batteries utilising charger algorithms that help to maximise the life of your specialised deep cycle batteries.

The ePOWER DC2DC+ Battery Charger features multistage smart charging technology that enables the charger to be connected to your battery bank permanently. With the input of multiple sources, you can be assured of charging your batteries whenever underway; or when the sun is shining on your solar array.

As dictated by battery manufacturer’s recommendations, deep cycle batteries require a multistage charge sequence for perfect, fast and accurate charging. The Enerdrive ePOWER DC2DC+ smart charger delivers three primary charge stages.

Stage 1 – Bulk or Boost charge; The battery is charged at full rated output current of the charger until the battery reaches its final charging voltage, known as its absorption voltage. In this step, around 80% of the battery is recovered as fast as possible.

Stage 2 – Absorption Charge; With the charger voltage held steady, the remaining 20% is replaced with the charger allowing the current to taper off as the battery approaches full charge.

Stage 3 – Float; Finally, in the float stage the charger voltage is lowered and held at a constant and safe predetermined level. This prevents the battery from being overcharged, yet allows the charger to supply enough current to make up for the self-discharge losses of the battery, while supporting any additional loads connected to the battery (such as DC lighting and refrigerators). This stage allows for the charger to be used as a DC power supply.

Smart Charging Feature

The ePOWER DC2DC+ Battery Charger will regulate its output based on the loads connected to your battery bank. This function is important to maintain the life of your battery bank as some battery chargers mistake loads for discharge and continue to keep the batteries in the bulk or absorption stage for extended periods of time, which will damage the battery bank. The ePOWER DC2DC+ Battery Charger has two methods of load based regulation to ensure your battery charger transitions to float when it should do so.

Maximising your Solar Harvest using the DC2DC+

The Solar Input on the DC2DC+ unit has a maximum rated INPUT current of 30amps. This means it is optimised for using higher voltage ‘grid’ type modules for best output performance. The maximum achievable output using standard 20Voc solar modules will be approx 35amps @ 14.4Vdc.

Q & A

  • Hello, Can I run 2 seperate solar sources into the unit? I'm looking at a fixed 180w panel on the roof, and then plugging an additioanl 200w blanket into it when I stop.Alan

    Hi Alan,

Yes you cold certainly do that. Ideally you would want to set up an external Anderson plug to connect the solar blanket into that then runs back to the charger.

  • Hi. What is the maximum voltage that it will except from solar? I use a 300w house panel which puts out about 35v

    Hi Andrew,

The input voltage range is between 14.5 - 45VOC.

  • Hi, just wondering if you are able to select which the charger will draw from first? Eg. Solar over alternator. If so will it still use the alternator if more is needed?

    Hi Isaac,

There are provisions to manually override the charging source from alternator to solar.

However Enerdrive state: If Manual Override Mode is used and left on there is a risk of flattening the start battery. The preferred method is to use the automatic override method by connecting the ignition source to the ignition terminal of the DC2DC+ charger.

  • HI, is the latest model that will charge up to 50amps? Cheers

    Hi Marc,

Yes this is the latest model from Enerdrive.

It does have the capabilities of charging up to 50A!

  • Hi Team,Two questions.1) When connected to my smart alternator car, with the car off and solar connected, I assume the charger will charge my aux battery bank using solar, but as soon as the car is on, it will preference the alternator.2) I have two

Hi There, in regards to question 1, vehcile charging will take priority when the ignition is on. Unfortunately question 2 didn;t come through. Feel free to call us on 1300 400 122 and we will be happy to help.

  • Hi I have a Enerdrive power charger pack 3 and it is making a continuous noise, should this be happening.

Hi There, It could be the cooling fan. Feel free to contact us on 1300 400 122 and we will be happy to get more information and advise next steps.

  • Does the dcdc charger come with smart alternator battery sense module or doIhave to buy it separately. Thanks

Hi There, It would need to be bought separately. It is generally reccommended to wire it directly off the ignition. You will find a helpful video HERE.

  • Hi Will this charger take 4 x 160 watt panels in parallel. Thanks Chris

Hi There, Yes, 4 x 160w or 4 x 180w panels connected in parallel would be ok for solar input on this charger.

    Kind Regards

  • Does the Enerdrive dc2dc charger have a voltage sensitive relay to disconnect from the starter battery of a vehicle with a standard (dumb) alternator once the ignition is off?

    Hi There,

If you use the ignition sense wire, the DC DC charger will cut off leaving your starter battery fully charged.

You can review the manual HERE to look at install options.

  • If the charger is mounted in a camper or can, what would the result of NOT connecting the ignition wire?

    Hi There,

Please refer to the notes on page 21, and 22 for details regarding ingition sensing. You will find them HERE.

  • Can it run from the solar & altenator simuitaneousl with a preferance to solar first.

    Hi There,

The EN3DC40+ will not charge from the alternator, and solar at the same time.

It will preference the alternator when the vehicle is running. To switch to solar you would need to change the charger setting to solar.

  • LiFePo4 manufacturers suggest that the dc/dc charger output should be 20% of the battery's Ah capacity. This suggests that the charger is unsuitable for a battery less than 200Ah. can the output be limited in anyay to 20A / 30A etc?

    Hi There,

The Enerdrive 40A charger output can be programmed from 5A - 50A depending on your battery size.

  • If I have a 100ah AGM in my camper and a 200w solar blanket will this 40amp DC to DC be okay to use? I plan to upgrade to a lithium battery in the future so want to install something for now and when I get the lithium battery.

    Hi There,

The Enerdrive 40A DC DC charger will certainly do the job for your current installation, and will also work for your future lithium battery installation.

They are a great charger, and very easy to install.

  • Am I able to run 240v power into this unit when my 4wd is parked up to keep my 12v system in peak condition?

    Hi There,

The Enerdrive DC to DC charger does not have mains power input.

To charge your system from mains power you would require a 240V charger.

You can find our range of 240V chargers HERE

  • Hi,Just wondering what the IP rating of these are.eg. IP67. Thanks Grant

    Hi There,

These chargers are not IP rated sorry. They are designed to be fit inside the vehicle with no possibility of coming in contact with water.

  • Can I use the dc2dc charger with a 600 watt wind turbine. I have a battery bank of 4 120 AH 12 volt batteries.

    Hi There,

This charger is not suitable for use with wind turbines sorry.

  • Can I link Enerdrive dc-dc and 60a ac-dc charger outputs together and then run one cable to a battery?

    Hi There,

Unfortunately Enedrive chargers along with other chargers we sell are not capable of doing this.

An option would be a Redarc Manager system however we do not stock them on their own at present.

  • hi guys ....just wondering if the charger will work if i run my 400watt airgen to the starting battery first then run the charger input wires to start battery,,to be able to charge a house battery(300amp) without starting the engine TIA roger

    Hi There,

We would recommend clarifying this with Enerdrive.

You can contact them on: 1300 851 535

  • Does the temperature compensation sensor work when the unit is operated with custom charge settings?

    Hi There,

Yes it doe The only setting which renders the temp sensor unusable is Lithium mode. This is ok because the temp variables allowable for lithium is such that the lithium algorithm is not effected by it.

  • Does it automatically choose 24v when attached to a 24v system or does it manually have to be switched?

    Hi There,

You do not need to manually set that your system is 24V.

Provided the voltage from the system meets the 24V requirements for the charger, it will do all the work.

You can read the manual for the charger HERE.

  • What is the maximum amount of solar wattage i can use with the endrive ePower 12v 40 Adc-dc charger?

    Hi There

    Enerdrive state the following:

*Note: The recommended maximum solar wattage input for the DC2DC+ Charger is 500w. You can however “overdrive” the MPPT controller. Please note that doing this is partially an economic decision. You can install more power than the controller can use and this will contribute to better power availability. Enerdrive suggest a total maximum overdrive of 20% (total 600w). On cloudy (or intermittent sunny) days there will be little or no power shaving and the extra power will serve the battery well with more energy harvest earlier and later in the day

  • Would you recommend having a seperate mppt solar regulator to the dc - dc charger so that a secondary battery can be charged by both inputs at the same time or is a dc - dc charger with mpg input good enough to do the job

    Hi There

From our experience we do not see the need for an additional MPPT for charging a second battery at the same itme as charging from the vehicles alternator.

The Enerdrive EN3DC40+ can output up to 50A @ 12V which is a lot of charging power.

  • If I have a 240volt charger also connected to the batteries and I plug it in to keep everything top up when in my shed will this hurt the DCDC charger? Or do I need to disconnect it?

    Hi There

Provided you are not trying to charge with both sources at the same time there should be no issue whatsoever!

A lot of folks do this with their caravans to prevent the batteries going dead when in storage.

  • Does this charher have functions to communitcate with a smart alentator

    Hi There

The Enerdrive DC DC charger is designed to work with smart alternators without any charging issues.

  • Is this charger able to charge a calcium battery, the specs only mention Gel, AGM, Flooded, Lithium

Unfortunetely they don't have a Calcium charging profile. You would need to contact your calcium battery supplier and find out if they recommend one of the standard settings noted, ie Gel, AGM, Flooded or Lithium, and then set the chargers accordingly.
